May 7, 2024 – Representatives Brad Wenstrup, D.P.M. (R-OH) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) introduced the bipartisan Hospital Inpatient Services Modernization Act (H.R. 8260). The legislation includes a five-year extension of the Acute Hospital Care at Home (AHCAH) waiver program to allow participating providers to continue furnishing services that enhance access to care.

This bill will allow for the expanded delivery of hospital-level care for Medicare beneficiaries in the comfort of their own home. It incorporates feedback received from providers and health systems participating in the AHCAH program or considering doing so under an extension of the waiver. The bill also includes improvements to data collection required under the program to better inform Congress regarding the program’s impact and hopefully move the discussion toward program permanence.

As of April 22, there were 327 hospitals and 134 health systems in 37 states approved to participate in the AHCAH program.
